Weekends East
Where can you go east of Roosevelt Island? It's easy now that the F train stops on the Island on weekends. But check the schedule to be sure it is running on any particular weekend before using these instructions. This weekend, for example, the R train will serve Roosevelt Island. Simply take the R to Roosevelt Avenue, then change for the F on the same platform. Not all these routes are fast, but they are cheap. You avoid a trip into Manhattan to transfer. You get to see new sights and neighborhoods. You avoid those car service trips that cost so much for such short trips.
Home Depot Take the F to Roosevelt Avenue. Cross over to the Manhattan bound platform. Take The R local train to Northern Blvd. (second stop). Exit at front of train. Home Depot is two blocks, Pergament and Toys R Us are four blocks from the station. Information: www.homedepot.com
Queens Center Mall Take the F to Roosevelt Avenue (the first stop after 21st St./Queensbridge) and change for the R local across the platform. Take the local to Woodhaven Blvd. Upstairs is the Mall containing an array of Department and specialty shops. Info: www.shopqueenscenter.com
The Library If you'd like to know about Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk Counties' histories, take the F to the 168th Street stop. Four blocks from the station is the Jamaica branch of the Queensborough Public Library. It has an excellent local History section with lots of information about our eastern-neighbor counties. Info: www.queenslibrary.org
Queens Museum Take the F into Queens. At Roosevelt Avenue, transfer to the 7 train. Get off at 111th Street for all these sites. Info: www.queensmuseum.org
LaGuardia Airport Take the F train to Roosevelt Avenue, then the Q33 bus directly to the airport (about 25 minutes). Info: www.panynj.gov
