Roosevelt Island-based Orphans International raised about $75,000
in its fund-raising affair at the Yale Club earlier this week.
Jim Luce, founder of the organization, received a Congressional
Recognition Award through the office of Rep. Charles Rangel.
Over 350 people participated, and there were diplomats and
performers, including this Sulawesi dancer from Indonesia,
Guyana, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, the Philippines, Venezuela, and
the Dominican Republic. The organization received letters
of support and proclamations from a long list of officials,
including Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton,
Representatives Rangel and Carolyn Maloney, Mayor Mike Bloomberg,
City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, and Assemblymember Pete
Grannis.
