The RIOC Column
Like the rest of New York City, we are now completely dug out, sanded, shoveled and de-iced from the recent blizzard. Let's hope it's the only one we have in 2005. Once again, RIOC crews worked hard to make Main Street and the sidewalks passable as soon as possible. And once again, people on the Island responded to the snow emergency conditions. But there were some car owners who - it seems, unthinkingly - parked their cars on the side alleyways between Main Street and the East River. Besides causing inconvenience for the work crews, parking in these side alleyways would have hampered any emergency response vehicles. Thankfully, there were no incidents this time, but in the future, please tell your neighbors that parking in the side alleyways in a snow emergency places us all in danger. Roosevelt Island has been in the news of late, as I'm sure many of you read about the Octagon in The New York Times Real Estate section on January 23, by Christopher Gray, detailing the history of this left-behind fragment of the old New York Lunatic Asylum. This was in addition to the earlier arts piece in the Times on January 9 about the famed Louis Kahn design for an FDR memorial at Southpoint. I'm sure we will be reading more about this project in the years to come. Finally, in some Hollywood news, my daughter, Shari Springer Berman, who's in the business, ran into well-known movie director Walter Salles, who told her that Roosevelt Island is his favorite place to film. I'm sure many of you remember last summer's shoot of Dark Water, Salles' remake of a Japanese thriller starring Jennifer Connelly, which comes out this summer.
