The question of the week has been: What are they doing in the West Channel? As previously reported in The WIRE, they’re "hardening" the subway tunnel, a possible point of vulnerability to terrorism. The crane-barge is so big that some 88 tires are mounted on each side as bumpers.

The crane transfers giant slabs across the deck and into the water, lowering them to positions previously prepared.
Meanwhile, below, a smaller crane and barge are positioned to reach far below the surface to prepare the tunnel under the East Channel for the same work.

There’s work behind the subway ventilation shaft, too, to provide an extension of the Promenade and to strengthen the seawall against possible incursion of water from the East River. Construction continues on Southtown building #4. It was topped off two weeks ago.

Landscaping is under way at Octagon Park, and a playground set, is near completion.

On Thursday morning, workmen were digging a trench for electrical lines to provide lighting on the Promenade just south of Octagon Apartments and the dock.

The ground is being prepared just west of the Tram station on the Island, for installation of the antique trolley kiosk, left, which is temporarily stored inside the fence on Southtown grounds.

The two photos show work being done by the City at Tramway Plaza in Manhattan, turning it into a small park.
