Briefly...
-
Daffodils will bloom
again in Roosevelt Island’s Spring,
thanks to a Dutch bulb supplier who was
moved by the events of 9/11/01, Hans van
Waardenburg. He pledged to donate
500,000 bulbs yearly and, this year, 500
of them are coming to the Island.
-
They’ll be planted in
six locations: Octagon Park Apartments
residents will plant them in the park
there; Coler-Goldwater Hospital will
plant them at the public garden area of
each campus; The Garden Club’s Ali
Schwayri will plant them near the Good
Shepherd Community Center and PS/IS 217;
and RIOC staff will plant them in the
turnaround garden just north of 475 Main
Street.
-
In the autumn of
2001, the Roosevelt Island Historical
Society coordinated the planting of
3,000 daffodil bulbs. RIHS is also
coordinating this year’s planting.
- Across the City, more than 20,000
volunteers have planted some three
million of the flowers in some 1,300
different sites.
