Tennis Group Holds Season Finals

Yao Fu, 2006 RITA Women’s Singles Second Place; Halina Pavels, 2006 RITA Women’s Singles Champion, Atsumi Kolba, 2006 Women’s Singles Third Place

The Roosevelt Island Tennis Association (RITA) held its season-ending Club Championship Tournaments over the last two weekends in September and the first weekend of October. Matches were held in five categories.

The first weekend tournament was Men’s Doubles. In a hard fought final, winners Paul Fraccalvieri and J.B. Jones were victorious over Marcello Cali and Razy Farook.

Mixed Doubles were held the following weekend. Last year’s winners, Halina Pavels and Mathew Samuel, won over last year’s finalists, Atsumi and Mike Kolba.

The third weekend was devoted to Men’s and Women’s Singles. The Women’s Singles final was held in a round robin format with last year’s winner, Halina Pavels, victorious over runners-up Yao Fu and Atsumi Kolba.

The Men’s Singles was won by newcomer Arvind Rampurada in convincing fashion, beating last year’s winner, Michael Kolba, in a semi-final and winning over last year’s finalist, Paul Fraccalvieri, in the final.

The Men’s Singles Consolation round was played in a round robin format won by Luc Labelle.

Play Continues

Even though the Tennis Association has officially ended its season’s activities, and RIOC’s official oversight and maintenance of the courts ends November 30, the nets will remain in place over the winter and the lights will stay on for evening play. All players with valid 2006-2007 tennis permits may continue to access the courts until March 31, 2007.
