Verdant Powers Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy project is finally
getting into the water. It will generate electricity for Gristedes and
Motorgate with an initial six turbines, the first of 100 to be placed in the
East Channel. At left, a rig has been drilling for pylon placement. Below,
Dean Corren and Hannah Abend show power distribution equipment in the
test-center control shack, which is on the East Promenade between Motorgate
and the location chosen for the first six underwater turbines. The control
center also houses fish monitoring equipment; the project was delayed well
over a year to clear regulatory hurdles. Once the concept is fully proved,
Verdant Power expects the project to be replicated in remote areas which
have flowing streams but no existing source of electrical power. It also has
green-power potential in river and coastal areas.
