The WIRE’s December 10 survey of street lighting marked the first instance of lost ground since regular checkups began October 16. Now, 23.3% of streetlights are dark, a bit worse than the 21.6 percent reported December 2.

In Sunday night’s survey, all the lights along the west promenade from Manhattan Park to Octagon Park were dark, including lights at the south end of the soccer field, which were alive in all previous surveys.

Three of six candelabra fixtures on the promenade north of the subway were dark. Wellsbach has now replaced all the candelabra luminaires – five bulbs on each pole – but half weren’t working late Sunday night. The northernmost candelabra pair are non-working, with the failure of the southernmost light near Meditation Lawn contributing to darkness in that area. As reported in the last issue of The WIRE, this main thoroughfare streetlight has been out for more than a year.

In contrast, one streetlight at the southeastern edge of Meditation Lawn is now always on, day and night.
