• The Phase I plan for Southpoint Park will be
described in detail Monday night at 7:00 in the Good Shepherd Community
Center, as the Trust for Public Land continues its work on the park.
There’s a diagram and additional detail on page 21.
• In the center spread of this issue, you’ll find a
high-altitude aerial photograph of Roosevelt Island. It’s
somewhat outdated by construction since the date it was taken, but we
publish it as an interesting view nonetheless.
• The Roosevelt Island Democratic Club has
elected Deirdre Breslin and Archie Seale as co-presidents. The group
will have a table at Roosevelt Island Day next Saturday, and has a
meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 19. Sandra Zwerling and Josephine
Barnes are serving as VPs for national and local affairs, respectively.
Recording Secretary is Helen Chirivas; Mary Camper-Titsingh is
Corresponding Secretary; Gail Dunmore is Treasurer. More information: 212-421-5417.
• The emergency plan for Roosevelt Island was
examined recently by representatives of the Island’s CERT team and the
Residents Association, after they signed a non-disclosure agreement. At
last month’s RIRA Common Council meeting, they reported satisfaction
with the plan in its current state. RIRA President Matthew Katz
characterized the plan as "reasonable, as far as it goes," but observed
that the plan needs some means of informing the community in emergency
conditions.
• The north elevator at Motorgate will get fixed under a deal cut
between RIOC President Steve Shane and a representative of Manhattan
Park. RIOC will share the cost of the repairs in exchange for not being
held to a requirement to repair the escalator at Motorgate, which Shane
described as "absolutely unnecessary."
