The Shape of the Island's Morning Rush

New York City Transit data show turnstile swipes over a four-hour period, totaled over three days (Monday-Wednesday, September 10-12, 2007), indicating that the peak of the morning rush arrives just before 8:00 and continues strong until 8:45.  (Lines are jagged because, at the subway, Red Bus arrivals don't coincide with turnstile data collection points, which are six minutes apart; at the Tram station, peaks in the jagged graph line occur when a barrier tape is dropped to allow access to the loading platform.)   The lesson of the data seems to be that avoiding 8:00-8:45 a.m. will make your commute smoother.  But the data do not reflect the available capacity of F trains arriving from Queens.  [Source data]
